In 2022, I served as Art Advisor and Co-curator of the American University in Cairo's collection for the Gazebia Sirry Retrospective—a landmark exhibition that ran from October through December at the Center of Arts at Aisha Fahmy Palace in Zamalek. This retrospective brought together works from the AUC collection, the Modern Art Museum, and private collectors in collaboration with Egypt's Ministry of Culture.

 

The retrospective exemplified a collaborative curatorial model that prioritized both institutional responsibility and public engagement. My role encompassed authentication of the AUC collection, contextualizing works within the broader landscape of contemporary Egyptian art, and ensuring proper preservation and presentation standards. By partnering with governmental and institutional stakeholders, the exhibition transcended the university context and positioned contemporary Egyptian art as a matter of national cultural significance.

 

The project fulfilled Gazebia Sirry's donation agreement with AUC, which stipulated that her artwork be displayed in a proper, safe gallery environment accessible to broader public audiences. Beyond this contractual obligation, the retrospective demonstrated institutional commitment to contemporary art stewardship, created a replicable collaborative model for other institutions, and made significant contemporary artistic practice accessible to diverse audiences beyond the university community.

 

This curatorial project reflects my broader commitment to institutional excellence and cultural advocacy. Just as I direct students toward their full potential through hands-on mentorship and real-world experience, I approached this retrospective with the conviction that contemporary art deserves serious institutional resources, scholarly attention, and public access. The project required balancing multiple stakeholder interests—the donor's intentions, the institution's mission, the artist's legacy, and the public's access—while maintaining curatorial integrity throughout.
